Air Pollution App

Code for Chapel Hill could partner with the town of Chapel Hill in order to create a mobile application that would allow residents to view the air quality in different parts of the town, and could become a useful source of research data with utility in urban planning and new green initiatives.

Geographic zoning data and existing air quality sample data can be pulled from Chapel Hill Open Data. Additional data collected would need to come from air quality sensors, which would either need to be funded through the University of the town. Initially, low-budget sensors that are not connected to the internet can be placed around town on select test days in order to limit costs in the development stage and create a minimum viable product as the software is developed and tested. After completion of the mobile application, sensors similar to the existing one at the library could be installed at test sites around town.
